Readers of the UMAP News emails will be aware of recent developments so I will keep this item brief and to the point. During the last six months or so the following developments have taken place:
UMAP documentation has been placed on the WWW. UMAP now runs with all versions of the (E)UGCM up to version 2.1. UMAP can be used to diagnose the USMM. Filtering routines have been added to the UMAP utility routines. Nick Hall's cross-latitude mass and energy budget codes have been added in (XL diagnostics).
All the above items are available in version 2.2. Currently underway is work to enable UMAP to diagnose data on PV surfaces, while changes will also be made to enable the program to diagnose the IFS output.

Version 1.0 of the SMAP diagnostic program for the Reading Simple GCM (SGCM) is now available for use, enabling users to diagnose the standard 21 2-D/3-D gridpoint fields (SG diagnostics), the lat.-long. fields (e.g. rainfall and stress - the PH diagnostics) and the zonal diagnostics of 38 parametrization tendencies (the XP diagnostics).
The program is based on UMAP, and comes complete with comprehensive documentation and a (non-windows) user-interface. It enables a variety of 2-D UTFs to be produced, along with time-averages, slices, profiles, Hofmoller plots, etc. 3-D data sets can also be extracted using the SG diagnostics.
At present I am only aware of three users of this package. If you'd like to give it a try, please let me know. Further development (which could include most of the UMAP-type diagnostics) will depend upon the program being used. If you use the SGCM and don't use SMAP (or have no intention of using SMAP) I'd be interested in hearing why.

An X-interface to the main UGAMP model will soon be available for all those users who hate messing around with namelists and job decks. Built using tcl/tk it is better looking than Catherine Zeta-Jones and incorporates:
What more could you ask for? Released some time around Christmas, this could be the ideal gift for the man/woman who has everything. Only through UGAMP - this is not available in the high street.
