A contract has been agreed with the Hadley Centre for UGAMP to use the Unified Model. This 3 year contract provides for two members of staff to implement the UM on the Cray at DRAL and also locally on a workstation. This is an exciting development which will place us in a unique position where we can compare the behaviour of two very different GCMs, the IFS and the UM. Colin Jones (ex. UEA and currently on a UCAR fellowship at Colorado State University) will be joining CGAM in October to work on this project.
The last few months have seen several members of CGAM involved in writing bids for future funding from NERC. The most important of these is the UGAMP proposal for 5 years' funding from March 1997 to support the core infrastructure and strategic research carried out primarily at CGAM and ACMSU. CGAM staff have also been involved in preparing proposals for thematic research programmes which will build on the modelling infrastructure provided by CGAM and ACMSU. These proposals have been submitted to NERC and are currently under review. More of this at the summer meeting!
