Research aims
The research aims of the ACMSU broadly fall into the following categories.
In addition we have a number of scientific support aims.
For more details of results from these research topics, see our Research
Highlights page.
Science goals stratospheric
- To apply chemistry-climate model versions of the Met. Office UM to
answer questions regarding model sensitivity, with respect to future
assessments of ozone recovery.
- Implementation and testing of detailed stratospheric chemistry into
the Met. Office Unified Model.
Science goals tropospheric
- Coupled chemistry-climate studies with the UM to understand the controlling
influences in the tropospheric ozone budget with respect to changing
climate and emissions.
- Research into the tropospheric oxidizing capacity.
- Diagnostic study of tropospheric ozone budget on a regional basis.
- High resolution off-line modelling and comparison with measurements.
- Validation and development of tropospheric chemistry schemes in the
Unified Model.
Scientific support goals
- Development of the new community climate model, UKCA, for aerosol-chemistry-climate
studies in collaboration with Leeds University and the UK Met. Office.
- Development of stratospheric chemistry-climate model versions of the
UM, in conjunction with data assimilation/nudging.
- Development of the new parallel version of p-TOMCAT, the off-line
CTM.
- Provide modelling support for field campaigns.
- Chemical data assimilation studies.
